The Maharani at KGC

Kensal Green Cemetery and one of its (temporary) residents gets a mention at a new exhibition at Kensington Palace.  The Historic Royal Palaces exhibition ‘The last Princesses of the Punjab’  traces the fascinating biographies of the three daughters of Duleep Singh, the deposed hereditary Maharajah of the Punjab, and the influence of their grandmother, Maharani Jind Kaur, and mother, Princess Bamba.

Friends and followers of FoKGC will know that, in the course of clearing the Dissenters’ Chapel catacomb of fifty years’-worth of rubble, the Friends discovered the memorial stone used to seal the loculus where the Maharani’s remains were stored until they could be shipped to India for Sikh ritual cremation.  The original stone has been conserved and is on display in the Thetford Museum as part of the Anglo-Sikh Heritage Trail.  A memorial plaque in the colonnade at the Dissenters’ Chapel was formally unveiled in an Anglo-Sikh celebration in 2009.

The excellent exhibition continues at Kensington Palace until November 2026.  Unfortunately, there are no discounts on ticket prices, though.
